The NetherSX2 emulator, the best PlayStation 2 emulator for Android right now, has received a new definitive version.
Inspired by the legendary AetherSX2, this 2025 version takes the best build of the old emulator and applies several improvements.
The update marks the release of version 2.0A Classic, already compiled and ready to install on mobile devices.
NetherSX2 Classic v2.0a is essentially a “remastered” version of the best AetherSX2 build — version 3668.
That’s right, it’s not a patch. This version already includes AetherSX2 inside.
As everyone knows, before shutting down the legendary PlayStation 2 emulator, the AetherSX2 developer released a problematic update on Google Play that included intentional bugs and ads.
This new version brings significant improvements by merging features scattered across previous builds and fixes originally made in PCSX2, using a database system without modifying the source code directly.
Changelog:
The new build is based on version 3668 of AetherSX2 but includes additional implementations, including full support for the RetroAchievements system. This feature had previously been discontinued for AetherSX2 but was restored thanks to collaboration between the RetroAchievements team and the NetherSX2 developer.
Additionally, the emulator received a new game compatibility database, updated controller database, widescreen and no interlacing patches — all properly adjusted to work with the current build.
Unlike previous versions that required manually compiling the app, NetherSX2 2.0A Classic is now available in ready-to-install format. The APK can be downloaded directly from the official Mobile Gamer Brasil Discord or Telegram (links in the description).
The app is completely ad-free and retains the traditional interface familiar to former AetherSX2 users. With all this, NetherSX2 is consolidated as the best current option to play classic PS2 titles on Android.
According to the changelog, several custom features from version 4284 were also ported to 3668. The new version is also ready to receive future features, being classified as alpha — meaning community feedback will be essential for the project’s ongoing development.
For those looking to run games like God of War 2, Shadow of the Colossus, or Resident Evil 4 on their phone, this is currently the best and most stable alternative.
