Resident Evil 2 Sales on iPhone Fall Short

AAA games are not having an easy time on the iOS system. According to the website mobilegamer.biz, Resident Evil 2 for iPhone hasn’t sold very well. It seems the game sold fewer than 10,000 copies. This issue is common with other games transitioning from consoles to mobile as well.

The iPhone 15 Pro launched promising a gaming experience almost identical to a console, with support from companies like Capcom, Ubisoft, and even Kojima Productions. However, things don’t seem to be going so well. Even Resident Evil VII, which was quite successful, reportedly sold only about 2,000 copies on the iPhone.

The website also revealed that the Resident Evil 2 remake, released for mobile last year, didn’t resonate much with the audience. Apparently, only around 9,500 people purchased the game. Despite a low launch price of about $10, revenue was modest at roughly $100,000. Meanwhile, console versions of the game continue to perform well. Assassin’s Creed: Mirage saw similar results, generating around $496,000 in revenue, which translates to approximately 9,920 players.

Why Didn’t Sales Take Off?
Even with the iPhone 15 Pro and 16 offering excellent processing power to handle demanding games, it seems people don’t use their phones for gaming in the same way they use a portable console. Even though the game allows a single purchase to play on both Mac and iPhone, and supports Bluetooth controllers, holding a phone horizontally for long gaming sessions might not be very comfortable.

In the author’s opinion, even with a controller, if the goal is to have a portable console experience, the game should work well out of the box without requiring accessories. Not to mention that for extended play sessions, the phone needs to stay plugged in for charging. Players notice these factors when they test the game’s free version.

Is There Still Hope?
These sales numbers were calculated over just one month. Perhaps things will change in the future.
